Barcelona, famous for its interesting architecture, is the capital of the autonomous community of Catalunya. The Olympic Port: A splendid giant made of whale bronze (by Fanck Gehry) greets you at the time you walk along the Olympic port. Here people come to stroll, to bathe, lunch. This new district born for the Olympic Games of 1992 is now one of the most visited in the city by the autochthones.
The Plaça Catalunya the Square of Catalonia, the link of Barcelona, where all roads start. From here one can practically go anywhere, by means of taxis, the tourist bus, metro or by some of the most important public bus-routes in the city. Here is where some of the most prestigious shops can be visited, also some of the most modern ones.
The word "Las Ramblas" is the Arabic word for "dry flowers". It is the most animated artery of the city. It is divided in five sections. Rambla Canaletes, Rambla dels Estudis It is also called La Rambla dels Ocells ( Avenue of the Birds) as it is a traditional site of a bird market. Rambla de Sant Josep it is also well-known as the Rambla de les Flors (Rambla of the Flowers). In the 19C this was the only place in Barcelona that flowers were sold. The flower market now stands alongside great kiosks selling all manner of books, magazines and newspaper from Spain and abroad. Rambla dels Caputxins and Rambla de Santa Monica.
You can also discover Antoni Gaudi by visiting this selection of monuments of the genius modernist architect. He was at the forefront of the Art Nouveau movement in Spain. His work in Barcelona led to the creation of some of the city's most notable landmarks. Gaudi was a pioneer in his field using color, texture, and movement in ways never before imagined. His works, both finished and uncompleted, stand as testimony to his genius.
