Barcelona : The Eurogames 2008

The famous city of Barcelona will host a great event which is the Eurogames, a sort of "Olympic Games" for the LGBT (gay, lesbian, transsexual and bisexual) community, taking place this year from July 24^th-27^th. The games are not something new; they began fourteen years ago; the first edition took place in The Hague in 1992.

We can think that this event is reserved for the gay community but actually the games are a celebration for all people, the purpose of the games is to give the message that another world is possible and sports are unfortunately one of the most homophobic spheres in our society, where most of professional sportsmen are scared of talking openly about their sexuality because they could lost their contracts or ruin their careers.

These games are taking place in Spain and this is particularly important, given that in this country as well as other southern European countries, a lot of prejudice are still running towards homosexuality, an attitude that cannot be tolerated in a modern, equal society.

Competitions will be held by the emblematic Palau Sant Jordi; more than 1500 athletes from many European countries have registered and an audience of nearly 30.000 people is expected to attend the various cultural events, parties, and the gay/lesbian film festival that will take place on the same days.

Barcelona: The capital

Barcelona is well-known for its playas. After the Olympic Port, they enlarge upon several kilometers, along the side of a large wood-walkside. The nearest are at only 20 min by walk from the Barri Gòtic, the Nova Icaria and Bogatell playas, par Bella and the Nova Mar Bella one. All watched over and well-equipped in showers and toilets. Even if there are a lot of people, one cannot trample on someone else! The places to visit…

The Barrio Gótico : The Medieval centre of the city and a true labyrinth. Walk around the little streets around the Cathedral. Plaça Sant Jaume: the square in which the town council is the regional government headquarters are based.

The word "Las Ramblas" is the Arabic word for "dry flowers". It is the most animated artery of the city. It is divided in five sections.
